Welcome!

Welcome to our blog on Skills for Health and Life, Michigan Model for Health's new high school health curriculum! As a participant of the December 4th Training of Trainers, you are invited to share your thoughts, ideas, and suggestions before, during, and after the training. Your comments will be read by others, and you can read the ideas others share. We hope you will exchange ideas by responding to one another.

You may wonder why we have chosen to use this strategy before the training. Reflection questions are asked throughout the curriculum. Students can respond using a blog or on paper. We thought it might be fun to try it out before December 4.

To get us started, share with one another your responses to these questions:
  • What do you hope to get from the training on December 4th?
  • What do you hope to find in the new curriculum?

  1. I am very excited about the new high school curriuclum. Being both a high school teacher and future trainer of this curriculum, I am looking forward to exploring about the objectives and content areas of the new curriculum. I am also hoping to gain tips on how to train teachers in this curriculum. I am looking forward to an action packed day. :)

    2. So happy to have high school teachers in our group on December 4th! You are a valuable resource for trainers who may not have HS teaching background!

  2. I am excited to see this new curriculum and explore! Our teachers have been asking for an "updated" Michigan Model curriculum and now they have it! For the training, I hope to explore in depth the curriculum since it is so different than the last one as well as useful training tips. An agenda and sample powerpoint would be great! (I'm not asking for much am I?). I think our day is going to FLY by!!

    2. You can ask for anything. And, I do take requests seriously. However, the results are sometimes a bit like Christmas morning...some items on the list are found wrapped under the tree and others wait for the next birthday celebration! Hopefully, most of your items will be provided!

  3. I am very excited to be trained in the new curriculum. I am thrilled that it is in ONE manual. I hope to receive many training tips and an in-depth look into the curriculum. I have looked at much of the curriculum already and it looks fabulous!

  6. I hope the new curriculum is skill based, clearly related to state and national standards and inclusive so that all students regardless of race, gender or sexual identity will feel like it’s talking to them. I hope to leave the training with a clear understanding of how the curriculum comes together and what best practices to emphasize when I use it with pre-service teachers.

    2. I share your hopes about the curriculum, too. Sometimes it's hard to write one product that is inclusive of everyone...but we get an "A" for effort. I'll be eager to chat with you after the training to get your perspective.

  7. I hope to gain the skills to train HS teachers on the new Michigan Model. I also would like to hear from other participants their training ideas and tips. I hope to find up to date, interactive, engaging lessons related to to the Health standards (and I think they are there). Very exciting!

    2. As you know, we will have a roomful of expert trainers to share ideas with. That's one of the best aspects to our group. Looking forward to exploring the curriculum with you!

  8. I have been looking forward to the new high school curriculum. One of the things I hope to learn about from the TOT is how to access and use some of the technology used in the curriculum. I will be very interested in a discussion of how to train this aspect of the curriculum.

    1. Actually, the software teachers will use in the curriculum will be school district specific depending on what is approved for use in each district. For example, I suggested a blog as a part of pre-training. But, some of our coordinators could not access this blog due to what is or isn't approved for use at their ISD. So, it's a tricky question "how to train the technology aspect of the the curriculum." The curriculum suggests optional software that might be used to meet a specific curricular purpose. Each teacher will need to find out the software approved for use in their district.

  9. So excited to see the final product!Just completed a draft of a School ImprovementGoal and Strategy for K-6 Michigan Model, with our School Improvement Consultant. Next step is a secondary Goal and Strategy. I figured it was too late to respond to the questions so just added some thinking. Thanks so much!
